DePaul is a world-class university that brings the world into the classroom and takes the classroom out to engage in the world. With a focus on the liberal arts and sciences, it promotes diversity in academic and student life by welcoming students who vary in age, background, ethnicity and religious affiliation.
In 1898, DePaul was founded as a women’s college with two acres and three buildings acquired from the financially struggling McCormick Theological Seminary in Lincoln Park. These included McGaw Hall (fondly known as the cheese grater building), Hayes-Healy gymnasium, tennis courts and Cortelyou Commons.
These early years were a boom for the university, with the addition of new campus buildings and curricula. The philanthropic support of alumni and foundations gave the school the ability to fund major fundraising campaigns for scholarships, faculty, programming and campus buildings.
During this time, the university introduced courses in biological sciences and psychology and bucked tradition with a shift in philosophy that added existential phenomenology to the curriculum. It also began introducing an undergraduate general education curriculum.
Over the next few decades, the university continued to evolve as a leading institution. It opened the country’s first graduate program in Islamic world studies and launched degrees in digital cinema, real estate, and sustainable urban development.
Today, it remains the largest Catholic university in the nation and a top private university. It continues to transform as it pursues its mission of social justice, a commitment to the education of future leaders who will make a difference in the world.
Over the past 17 years, the university has introduced a plethora of exciting new majors, schools and programs; launched two new colleges; completed a comprehensive fundraising campaign; and collaborated with unique partners. As a result, the university is able to offer the education its students need for a successful career in an increasingly complex and global society.
